Do you know the difference between hatha and vinyasa yoga? Whether you're looking to focus on targeting core strength and finding breath awareness through your yoga poses, or if you are looking for a more challenging style of yoga, this blog will show you the difference between the two and give you a good understanding of what to start with, and give you some benefits on both, no matter what level you are at in your yoga journey.

What is Hatha?

Hatha is known as a group of basic foundational poses for yogis looking to build core strength and increase breath awareness in yoga, this includes a wide variety of poses like downward facing dog and tree pose. This style of yoga combines physical technique and breathing awareness at a slow pace, perfect for beginners learning to apply breathing in yoga.

Fun Fact: The translation of Hatha, "Ha" meaning sun, and "Tha" meaning moon in Sanskrit, can also be referred to as wilful or forceful. Hatha originated in Hindu yoga, which has become popular in the West.

Benefits of Hatha

  • Targets core strength

  • Great for beginners

  • Improves balance in holding poses

  • Promotes relaxation and stress relief

What is Vinyasa?

Vinyasa is a style of yoga that syncs breath work to yoga poses, this style of yoga can be a more gentle transition between poses, promoting the natural breathing pattern with the flow of the yoga routine. This can be compared to something like dancing. Though vinyasa yoga can be very challenging, due to the faster pace of the routine, this can be a great style for more advanced yogis.

Benefits of Vinyasa

  • Perfect for advanced yogis

  • It can be a form of cardio fitness due to its fast pace

  • Improves flexibility

Difference between Hatha and Vinyasa

The difference between the two is that Hatha focuses more on bringing awareness to your breathing within each pose, creating a strong foundation in basic poses. This is more of a slower style of yoga, which is great for beginners. Vinyasa is a faster paced style of yoga more fitting for advanced yogis, as this focuses on the fluidity of one pose to the next, synching up your breathing in the process, creating a rhythmic routine.

Conclusion

Both Hatha and Vinyasa styles have great techniques targeting different outcomes within yoga, wherever you are in your journey. Hatha yoga is good for bringing awareness to your poses, and vinyasa is great for a more advanced practice of yoga. I am still using Hatha yoga at the moment, as I want a good base, though I might try out vinyasa when I'm next on the mat. Have in mind that you can do both depending on what you want to achieve in your practice, and always be mindful of your body.
