How I Stay Motivated to Practice Yoga as a Busy Full-Time Worker
Finding time and energy for yoga can be tough when life gets busy. In this post, I share simple habits that help me stay consistent — from keeping my yoga space cosy to embracing short, low-pressure practices that support my mood, energy, and ADHD. If you want easy, realistic ways to return to the mat on even your busiest days, this guide will help you build calming, sustainable yoga routines.
My week can get very busy as I work full-time 9-5, and having busy days can make me tired and low on energy, and all I want to do is flop into the sofa. I have found that with yoga, this can lift my mood and ground me, but I find on some days coming to the mat can be difficult. By learning some simple habits, this can help bring you to the mat with ease and not feel like its a burden.
Why Yoga Matters to Me
Yoga helps me feel grounded, lifts my energy levels, and I do notice a difference in my flexibility. On days that I miss yoga, I notice that I can feel a little like my joints need oiling, and my mood can turn sluggish. After a practice, I feel more flexible, grounded within myself, and a feeling of calm in my mind, which is great for my ADHD.
My Strategies for Staying Motivated
Between work, tedious chores during the week, and looking after yourself or others around you, energy can quickly disappear, and you can loose motivation. Some days, even a 10-minute practice feels like too much. Here are a few ways to stay motivated and create good habits:
Keep Your Yoga Stuff Visible
Have your mat rolled in the corner for you to see
Block/strap stored neatly near by
The mat I've got at the moment: Sustainable Non-Slip Jute Yoga Mat CompleteGrip™ - 4mm
Short Practices Count
5–20 minute yoga flows
Consistency > progression
I'm loving the bedtime routines with: Yoga With Adriene and Yoga With Bird
Set Up Your Area
Soft, warm, lighting
Add a calming playlist
Make It a Ritual Instead of a Task
Choose your time of day
A cup of tea before/after practice
Tiny routine that signals “yoga time”
Be Kind to Yourself
You will get imperfect practices; that's what makes us human. Shorter sessions can encourage you to the mat, and creating a welcoming atmosphere signals to your body that you're are in a safe environment.
My Yoga Habits
This is what my yoga ritual looks like:
I choose to practice just before bed.
Adding my practices to our joint calendar helps my partner hold me accountable.
As most of my practices are before bed, I set the lighting to a warm tone with candles, which helps me wind down ready for bed.
Tip: If you’re unsure of where to start, try my habits first, and branch out from there.
Final Thoughts
Finding the motivation to practice yoga when you’re juggling full-time work, daily responsibilities, and your own energy levels can feel like a challenge — and that’s completely normal.
What matters most isn’t having a perfect, long, or intense practice every day, but creating small habits that make yoga feel inviting rather than overwhelming.
By keeping your space cosy, making your practice simple, and being gentle with yourself on the tough days, you’ll find it so much easier to return to the mat, even when life feels busy.
P.S - Yoga is there to support you, ground you, and help you reconnect — and you deserve those moments of calm, so take that break.
