How to Set Up a Yoga Corner in a Small Flat
Living in a small flat doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your wellness routine. With some creativity and intentional design, you can carve out a calming, functional yoga corner—even in the tiniest of spaces.
A dedicated spot for your practice not only makes it easier to roll out your mat but also signals to your body and mind that it’s time to slow down, breathe, and move.
Why Create a Yoga Corner?
There are lots of benefits to having a yoga corner in your living space this can be:
Consistency: Building a routine can make showing up to the mat easier.
Mindset Shift: Stepping into your chosen yoga area in your home, signals to your brain it's time to relax and focus.
Stress Relief: Creating an area that's stress free, gives you a calming space.
Convenience: Having your yoga corner at home cuts out the travel to yoga classes.
Even a square metre of space can become your yoga sanctury, make sure you set up with intension.
Step 1: Choose the Right Spot
The first step is identifying where your yoga corner will be. Look for an area in your home that you don't use often, this helps you identify that this area is now associated with your yoga routine.
Make sure you give yourself enough room for your yoga mat layed out (standard mats are around 68 inches long by 24 inches wide) and that you have enough room to stretch your arms out too.
Options to consider:
A corner of your living room near a window for natural light.
A section of your bedroom where you can create a calming vibe.
A balcony or a garden (if you have one) for fresh-air practice.
Step 2: Clear and Declutter
Yoga is about clarity and calm, and having a cluttered space can feel overwhelming, causing the space to feel unwelcoming. Think about making this area as stress free as possible, this can be moving furniture around, tucking stuff away in boxes etc.
Tip: If storage is an issue, consider putting stuff away under the bed, shelve storage, adding hangers behind doors, or even buying baskets or boxes for smaller stuff.
Step 3: Choose Your Yoga Essentials
You won't need a lot of essentials to start your yoga practice, here is a few things to help get you started:
Yoga Mat: Try the Non-slip Jute Yoga Mat perfect for any type of practice
Blocks: Great for support, alignment, and modifying poses.
Cushion: Perfect for restorative yoga or meditation.
Blanket: Adds comfort and warmth for grounded poses or meditation.
These items can be stored neatly in a basket or small storage bin when not in use, so they don’t take over your flat.
Step 4: Set the Environment
Cultivating the environment in your new yoga space can set the tone for your practice. This is my favourite part as you can completely talior this to how you want, below is a few things to get you started:
Ways to set the environment
Lighting - You can add fairy lights, candles or warm lamps for a cozy evening practice.
Aromatherapy - Candles, incense or even essential oils, especially lavender and chamomile for relaxaton. If the area is too small for this, consider aroma sprays too.
Teas - This is for me personally, i like to pour myself a little tea after my practise, I normally go for peppermint and green tea.
Plants - Adding plants to your yoga corner can add a pop of colour, and freshness.
Personal touches remind you that this corner is special, set apart from the rest of your flat.
Step 5: Create a Practice Ritual
Your yoga corner isn't just about how the set up looks, it's also about how it makes you feel. By creating a small ritual this helps you step into the practice mentally, preparing you for focus and relaxation. Here are a few things you can do:
Roll your mat out and set an intension.
Light a candles, lamp etc.
Put on a calming playlist
Pour yourself a tea, I like to do this after.
These rituals help your mind shift from “everyday mode” to “yoga mode,” even if your corner is only a few feet away from your work desk.
Inspiration on Small Yoga Corners
Window Nook: Place your mat by a sunny window, add a plant, and store props in a basket nearby.
Bedroom Retreat: Keep a foldable mat under the bed and pull it out when it’s time to practice, paired with fairy lights or a salt lamp.
Living Room Setup: Use a soft rug under your mat and designate a low shelf or box to hold yoga accessories.
Remember, it doesn’t need to be Pinterest-perfect, it just needs to be functional and meaningful for you.
Final Thoughts
Creating a yoga corner in a small flat is about intentionality, not square footage. By dedicating even a tiny space to your practice, you carve out a pocket of calm and mindfulness in your daily life.
Start with the essentials, a mat, a clear space, and maybe one or two props. Over time, add personal touches that inspire you: a plant, calming scents, soft lighting. The most important thing is that your yoga corner feels like a retreat, a place you can return to day after day to reconnect with yourself.
With a little creativity, even the smallest flat can hold a sacred space for movement, breath, and stillness.
