What to Do When You're Having a Low Day (Tried and Tested Tips)
I'm a big advocate for good mental health, and this is my little corner of the internet where I share the things that genuinely help me on those harder days.
Ever noticed that some days you wake up feeling more groggy than usual? For me, at one point in my life, that was almost every single day — and it made getting through even the simplest things feel like running a marathon.
If you've ever struggled to drag yourself out of bed, felt like you were carrying a weight around with you all day, or found yourself snapping at the people you love for no real reason — you're not alone, and you're in the right place.
I'm a big advocate for good mental health, and this is my little corner of the internet where I share the things that genuinely help me on those harder days.
How this Can Look in Your Day to Day:
Finding it extra hard to get up in the mornings
Feeling like you have a massive weight over your body all day
Feeling short fused with the people around you even when you don't mean to
If sounds like you, welcome to my space on the internet. I am a full advocate of good mental health, and I'm going to share with you some of the things I like to do when I have days get like this.
My Tired and Tested Tools
Communicate to others - I normally let my partner know when I'm feeling down, and how he can help me. This can help people understand what's going on and give more support where needed.
Journaling - This is a good way to vent it all out of my system. I like to write about how I'm feeling, and to just remind myself that this will pass, because I always seem to think this is how my life is... when it's only for 1-3 days
Take a nap - I love a good nap!!! This can be a mini brain reset for me. If this doesn't work that's ok too.
Shower - Basic hygiene is always great , and me for this works similarly to the nap, I come out feeling like I've washed all my troubles away and I've refreshed myself in the process.
Go on walks - I use an app called AllTrails. This is a great app for local walks in the area as it outlines, how long the walk is, how to get there and more.
If none of these work, I rot - Sometimes the tools you have can be great, but for me sometimes they don't always work and that's ok. In this case, I normally just give myself what my brain wants, and that to sit on the sofa watching TV or be in bed and go on TikTok.
These methods have taken me a while to figure out, but now I swear by these. Everyone is different so don't be disheartened if these tools don't work for you. The important thing is to trust yourself and identify your body cues.
How to find what works for you?
What do I reach for when I'm feeling down?
What will make me feel better?
What bare minimum self care can I do for myself right now?
Have I eaten food recently? If not, what easy snack can I have?
How can I be supported by others? This could be writing in a diary, communicating to a family member/partner/friend what you need, or just to vent it out.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you show up for yourself — even if that looks different every single day. Some days that might mean going for a walk in the fresh air, and other days it might mean staying on the sofa watching TikTok, and honestly? Both are valid.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach to getting through the harder days, and it can take time to figure out what works for you — so be patient with yourself while you're working it out. You know yourself better than anyone else does. Trust that.
If any of this resonated with you, I'd love to hear what tools help you get through your down days — drop them in the comments below. And if you're having one of those days right now, I hope this helped you feel a little less alone.
What do you do when you're having off days? Let me know.
