Starting your first yoga class and not sure what to wear? Choosing the right yoga outfit can make a huge difference to your comfort, confidence, and focus on the mat. In this guide, we’ll break down the best clothing materials, fit tips, and essentials so you can feel prepared and relaxed for your very first session.

Materials to Wear

“Each fabric has its own strengths and limitations pertaining to thermoregulation and comfort.” says the The Role of Sports Clothing in Thermoregulation, Comfort, and Performance During Exercise in the Heat: A Narrative Review paper

Each material that is made for active wear each has its own benefits and drawbacks. In order to find the material that best suits you for your yoga practices, you need to make sure you take into account your temperature regulation, how often you sweat in sports activities, what's comfortable for you, etc.

Cotton - Is a great breathable material, a more natural choice, and better absorption than most synthetic fibres, but it can cause irritation on the skin during exercise.

Nylon - Higher moisture absorption than polyester, but it has a slower drying rate.

Polyester - A more lightweight choice, cheaper, and more comfortable, but has low moisture absorption, can also cause discomfort on the skin.

Wool - Another great natural fibre material, better wicking capabilities than cotton, but it's a heavier material, causing it to dry more slowly.

Rules to Go By

In order to have maximum comfort in your yoga sessions, avoid clothes that are too baggy; you don’t want your clothes getting in the way of your stretches and poses, and blocking your view from the teacher.

Opt for a more lightweight material that's breathable and comfortable for you. Its a great idea to get inspiration from others on what to wear, but don’t copy, as one thing can be great for someone else, but not for you.

Make sure the clothing is comfortable and supportive when you’re stretching.

A Couple of Pieces To Try

For example, this can look like leggings, shorts, unitards, sports bras, loose clothing (but not too baggy), and gym tops. I have made a small list below on what I think would be a great start for you. This is for both men and women:

What to Bring to Your Class

Not sure what to bring to your first class? I've got you covered.

Yoga Mat - Don’t worry if you don’t have one yet, most classes can supply you with one.

Water Bottle - It's very important to stay hydrated.

Yoga Towel - For those extra intense classes, a towel is a good option.

Final thoughts

Your first yoga class should feel welcoming, comfortable, and stress-free — and what you wear, plays a bigger role than you might think. By choosing breathable, supportive materials and well-fitted activewear, you’ll be able to focus on your movement, breathing, and enjoyment of the practice.

Remember, there’s no perfect yoga outfit — the best choice is whatever helps you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to step onto the mat and begin your yoga journey.
